This is great news for those tournament directors that run 1 day 16 and 24-wrestler brackets. Now the tournament can be wrestled to completion. No 2 3rds, 2 5ths & 2 7ths. This also helps seeding and rankings because you actually get the head to heads.
On the flip side. Here in California we have a 40 match rule. The athletes can only wrestle 40 matches in the regular season. Coaches will now have to really watch the match count and maybe even schedule 1 less tournament. (I had to drop 2 tournaments, otherwise many of my girls mathematically could have up to 50 matches.)
For example:
With 5 match rule, 5 tournaments = 25 matches with 15 matches for duels or a couple of the tournaments can be 2-day.
With 6 match rule, 5 tournaments = 30 matches with 10 matches for duels, maybe 1 2-day tournament.
These scenarios are mostly for the average wrestlers who place 3-6 at tournaments. The top wrestlers always in the finals will wrestle fewer matches.
Maybe California can look at the possibility to up its match rule to 45 or 46? (Just a suggestion.)
