Lujan and Saldate pick up major decisions for Spartans
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – It was once again a Brad Wilton win at heavyweight that handed the Michigan State wrestling team a come-from-behind victory on the road, as MSU scored a 17-15 victory over Indiana Monday afternoon inside Wilkinson Hall.
Their second dual win of the holiday weekend improved the Spartans to 7-1 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten, while the Hooisers shifted to 2-3 and 0-3 in conference duals. The win also extended MSU’s winning streak over IU to four-straight and moved the all-time series to 51-26-3 in the Spartans’ favor.
Michigan State got the early lead in the 125 match, as sophomore Tristan Lujan’s third-period near-fall helped propel him to an 8-0 major decision over Jacob Moran. In a highly-anticipated bout at 133 pounds, redshirt senior Rayvon Foley saw his 16-match winning streak end at the hands of No. 18 Brock Hudkins, as the Hoosier used two third-period takedowns to get a 5-3 decision over Foley. Indiana used two more victories to take a 9-4 team lead, as Cayden Rooks defeated redshirt sophomore Jordan Hamdan in a 3-1 decision at 141, while his brother, Graham Rooks, picked up an 8-4 decision over redshirt sophomore Peyton Omania in the 149-pound bout.
The Green and White pulled within 9-8 after the 157-pound match, as sophomore Chase Saldate used three takedowns and a three-minute riding time to get a 12-0 major decision against Jonathan Kervin. In the next match, 165-pound sophomore Caleb Fish combined a takedown and four-point near-fall in the final 20 seconds of the bout to come away with a 7-1 decision over Kasper McIntosh. Redshirt junior Nathan Jimenez ended up in the longest match of the night at 174 pounds, lasting until the third extra period against Nick South before South pulled out a 2-1 decision in the second tiebreaker round.
In another touted matchup, No. 20 DJ Washington took down redshirt junior Layne Malczewski in the 184 bout, scoring an 8-5 decision that extended IU’s lead, 15-11. Redshirt Cameron Caffey got the Spartans back within one point after battling Nick WIllham to a 2-0 winning decision in the 197 match, and the redshirt senior Wilton hung tough against the larger Jacob Bullock in the heavyweight bout, getting a 2-1 victory over the Hoosier to clinch the 17-15 team score.
Michigan State returns home next weekend for a pair of matches against ranked Big Ten foes, hosting No. 16 Rutgers (Friday, Jan. 21, 6 p.m.) and No. 1 Penn State (Sunday, Jan. 23, 1 p.m.) at Jenison Field House. Both matches will stream on Big Ten Plus, with former Spartan wrestler Eric Olanowski on the call.
Head Coach Roger Chandler Quotable
“We talk a lot about team effort and execution within our program. These last two dual meets speak to the character of this program. It’s not just a couple guys contributing to each dual. All 10 guys in each dual competed as hard as they could and put our program in a position to win. We gave up only one bonus-point loss across both dual meets and that is huge in order win. Then on the flip side, we were able to get three bonus-point wins on the weekend which put us over the top.”
“How about Brad Wilton? He’s undersized at the weight class and followed the gameplan perfectly and gave everything he had today. I have so much respect for him filling in at a weight class that he didn’t want to compete at starting the year. At the end of the day, he’s doing it for his Spartan brothers and you can see the fight he’s giving every time he steps on the mat.”
Bout-By-Bout
125: Tristan Lujan (MSU) maj. dec. Jacob Moran (IU), 8-0
Lujan and Moran had an early stalemate, with Moran going for a shot on the restart, but Lujan was able to work out of it and end up with his own first-period takedown and quickly built up a minute of riding time. With Lujan going down to start the second, Moran kept the Spartan on the bottom for over a minute before Lujan escaped. Lujan went on top to start the third and tacked on a four-point near-fall while regaining his riding time advantage, holding Moran down for the entire frame to grab an 8-0 major decision.
133: No. 18 Brock Hudkins (IU) dec. No. 11 Rayvon Foley (MSU), 5-3
After a stalemate with a minute left in the first, Foley tried an attack that was unsuccessful before the frame ended. Foley got an escape to begin the second, with Hudkins getting a stall warning, but a Foley takedown later on was overturned after review. Another stalling call on Hudkins gave Foley a penalty point before the period ended, and Hudkins went down to start the third. A Foley stall warning was followed by a Hudkins escape, and Hudkins then got a takedown that Foley quickly escaped from. A late stalemate set up another Hudkins takedown, who rode Foley the rest of the way for a 5-3 decision.
141: Cayden Rooks (IU) dec. Jordan Hamdan (MSU), 3-1
Hamdan and Rooks had a stalemate halfway through the opening period, and Hamdan survived a late Rooks shot as time expired. With Hamdan down, he got the early escape near the edge of the circle, but Rooks had a takedown in the final seconds of the middle frame. Rooks escaped seconds into the third period, but neither side could get a takedown the rest of the bout, as Rooks secured the 3-1 decision.
149: Graham Rooks (IU) dec. Peyton Omania (MSU), 8-4
Omania scored a takedown 25 seconds into the bout, but Rooks got free after six seconds, and Omania turned out of a Rooks attack before a stalemate was whistled. Another Omania takedown led to Rooks escaping again before the end of the period. With Rooks on bottom, he got the escape early in the second frame, but his attack carried them out of bounds. Rooks got the takedown after the restart, and Omania got called for stalling to give Rooks a penalty point. Going down in the third, Omania was mat-returned and called for another stalling penalty point. Rooks picked up over 2 minutes of riding time, coming away with the 8-4 decision.
157: No. 24 Chase Saldate (MSU) maj. dec. Jonathan Kervin (IU), 12-0
Saldate had a takedown in the opening minute and built up over a minute of riding time before Kervin was warned for stalling, while Saldate tallied a two-point near-fall near the end of the period. Going down to start the second, Saldate got the escape and put in an attack that eventually got him a second takedown, and Kervin was dinged another stall that put Saldate up 8-0 entering the third. In the third, a neutral start led to another Saldate takedown, as two eventually went out of bounds. On the restart, Kervin was called for stalling again, giving Saldate a 12-0 major decision with over three minutes of riding time.
165: Caleb Fish (MSU) dec. Kasper McIntosh (IU), 7-1
Fish tried an upper-body attack in the opening minute that McIntosh countered, but McIntosh was warned for stalling in the final 15 seconds of the first period. McIntosh chose bottom to start the second, escaping 15 seconds into the frame and getting a shot in that Fish countered with an attack of his before the two were pulled out of the circle. With Fish down to begin the third, he quickly escaped and got a takedown with 20 seconds left in the bout, getting a four-point near-fall as well to score at 7-1 decision.
174: Nick South (IU) dec. Nathan Jimenez (MSU), 2-1 (TB-2)
Jimenez fended off an early shot by South as the two ended the first period scoreless. South got the early escape in the second, as the two wrestlers grappled for most the second frame without any more points. A caution call began the third with Jimenez down, but he got free 55 seconds into the period to bring the score even at 1-1 as the two stayed in neutral the rest of the frame and sent the bout to sudden victory. In the extra period, both sides got a shot in before a stalemate with 36 seconds remaining led to the first overtime ending. In the second overtime, South got the quick escape, giving him a 2-1 lead. The third overtime saw Jimenez down to start and he never was able to escape, as South got the 2-1 decision in the second tiebreaker round.
184: No. 20 DJ Washington (IU) dec. Layne Malczewski (MSU), 8-5
Washington converted a takedown 28 seconds into the match, but Malczewski responded with a reversal near the edge of the mat shortly after. On a restart after going out of the circle, Washington had his own reversal before letting Malczewski escape. Washington tacked on another takedown and Malczewski broke free again before a stalemate was called near the end of the first frame. Going down to start the second, Malczewski got free 38 seconds in, but Washington had another takedown in the closing ticks of the period. Going neutral to begin the third, Malczewski defended a Washington shot before the two went off the mat. Despite a late attack from Washington, the Hoosier ended with the 8-5 decision.
197: No. 23 Cameron Caffey (MSU) dec. Nick Willham (IU), 2-0
Caffey had the attack early on Willham’s leg, but the two went out of bounds before Caffey could land a takedown. Willham got a shot on Caffey’s leg on the restart, but a stalemate put them back in neutral before the end of the period. The second saw Willham go bottom, as Caffey was able to keep him down for over a minute before a stalemate. IU challenged whether Willham escaped before the two carried out of bounds after the restart, but the officials decided Caffey was still on top as Caffey held Willham down the rest of the period. In the third, Willham was warned for stalling before Caffey escaped, and an out-of-bounds whistle saved him from a Caffey shot. Caffey was warned for stalling late, but time expired to give him a 2-0 decision with riding time.
285: Brad Wilton (MSU) dec. Jacob Bullock (IU), 2-1
Wilton was warned for stalling in the first period after both sides tried to attack. A Bullock caution on a restart led to the two sides grappling for an opportunity until time expired on the first. Wilton nearly had two near-falls after Bullock started the second period down and built up 1:30 of riding time before Bullock could escape. With Wilton on bottom to open the third, he broke free in two seconds and Bullock got warned for stalling with about a minute left. A Wilton shot on Bullock’s leg pulled the two out. Wilton held off a late Bullock attack in the closing seconds, getting riding time to secure the 2-1 match-winning decision.
