Over the past 2 days I witnessed the worse referring at a tournament.
yes there were 2-3 refs that seemed to make good calls or adjustments as needed.
the rest made terrible calls, wrong position, no calls (looking at a a clear scoring position)
i recommend coach’s come together and report these these refs. If the ref is assigned to your match call the head ref and have them switched out.
I understand there is a shortage of refs but the schools are paying for a service and service has been poor.
Mr. Falcon you need to become an official.
Thanks but I though you were a parent. HS rules do not permit video review. College is set up for that but only a very limited amount of reviews are permitted for dual matches and tournament. Each official officiated other 75 matches during the 2 day event and I can't tell you how many judgement calls there are in those matches. Just as the ref missed the near fall points in video I got call for calling a pin 2 soon.
Any way take care!
David, what is YOUR background in wrestling?
As the head official for the CIF Girls Master and the incoming President of the Southern Ca. Wrestling Officials Association I would like to add the following.
This year we had only 140 officials to cover the CIF Southern Section, down from approximately 250 officials pre-COVID.
Many top officials did not return to officiate this pass year and some had to pull out of boys and girls master due to testing positive for COVID during the week. The official in the video who missed the pin was literal a last minute replacement as I go not get an other official to replace one who bowed out.
I agree that some of the officials would not have normally worked the event but what was there represents the best that we could get to come out.
Now Lets Talk About PAY! I live in Encino and drive to Oranges County every weekend to officiate, because I love the sport.
Girls Master I had to take off work on Friday to conduct groom check and weigh ins at 10:30am with the first round starting at 1:00pm and finishing around 9:15pm, almost an 11 hour day. On Saturday I conducted groom check and weigh ins starting 7:00am wrestling started at 9:00am and completed approximately 3:00pm for an 8 hour day.
So for 19 hours of being at the site my hourly rate of pay was $18.94 per hour, plus I had to pay for a hotel room Friday night that with tax was $164.00 plus my dinner and gas from Encino to OC and back.
So for those of you who like to see better officiating please feel free to contact me about becoming an official in Orange County as we would love to have the insight into like you do.
David. Congratulations to your daughter winning her weight class and Best of Luck at States
Yeah, it's been a rough year all the way around. Kids, events, refs, coaches, and parents all suffered from the loss of rhythm the last 2 years. The gap between the top squads and the rest only got wider.
I saw a lot of new faces wearing stripes this year, and missed a lot of familiar ones. I know their numbers were down, so they didn't really have the chance to select the all-stars to work the postseason tourneys: it was all hands on deck. Hopefully we'll all benefit from a full season and getting the 12 month cycle running again, as covid continues to recede in the rear-view mirror.
It really sucks to have calls blown in the postseason. But it's nothing new.
If we really want to improve the quality of the officials, we need to convince CIF to separate the girls and boys seasons. As girls continues to grow, facilities, refs, coaches, and resources are going to get more and more overstretched. If we put the girls in the fall season, most of those issues go away.
guessing this was the worst no call at the tournament. No pin no near fall. Following period opponent gets the pin call with in 10 seconds Of getting in position.
parents coaches schools need to demand better refs. Girls wrestling has earned their position to be treated with the same respect as boys wrestling.
note: I witnessed a ref dismiss a female coach challenging a call. When said female coach called another ref over to discuss what took place during the match after match ended is was dismissed. Schools head coach came over and discussed. Later on I guess said ref apologized.
