Willauer-Conttributing Writer-San Pasqual High School-Escondido, CA: 1-11-23- Collin McGuffey knows what it takes to wrestle for Granite Hills .Last year the Eagles Mat Star wrestled at 132 pounds winning the CIF Division II title and later lost to Brock Bobzien in the Masters finished in 2nd place.
At the 2022 CIF State Wrestling Tournament at Bakersfield's Rabobank Arena, the Eagles Mat Star went 6-2 in the competitive field but in the quarter final round to Del Oro's Damon Elliott 2-1. These 2 met for the second time for 5th place as Colin Guffey won over Del Oro's Elliiott 6-2
This year is a different story as competition heated up for the Jr Eagle as he prepared for 2 tournaments. Finished in 2nd place at the Zinkin Tournaments at Buchanan High School as he faced Brock Mantanona from Palm Desert in the finals and was pinned in 5:45. In the Reno Tournament , the Eagles finished in 22nd place with 23 points where McGuffey faced Laird Root of Poway in the finals where he won by a 4-0 score at 154 pounds
With a 2023 Record of 41-2 the Eagles junior won his second CIF Division II Wrestling title along with a total of 4 pins over Aaerrek Romero of Central Union at 1:39 in the first round, quarter final round pinned Erick Jake DeJesus at 1:02 Kristian Flores of San Pasqual at 24 and in the finals vs. Jacob Jiminez Sarrill at 1:11
Collin McGuffey of Granite Hills after winning the 2023 CIF Division II State Wrestling Title: " It felt good as my coaches keep telling me to keep scoring points which I did as we kept doing our job." " The Buchanan and Reno Tournaments were very competitive as it helps me prepare for the upcoming season."
I feel more nervous last season but for this year I feel confident in myself this year along with the coaches telling us to do our jobs on the mat."said Colin McGuffey
"In the 2022 CIF States Losing to Del Oro's Damon Elliott took a lot out of me in 2022 but I got him back for 5th place I was very happy about that." Our squad in East County is a team on the rise and doing very well."said the junior Eagle Wrestler
The next stop for Collin McGuffey will be the Masters Tournament at Mission Hills High School on February 17 and 18th followed by the CIF State Tournament that will take place at the Rabpbank Arena in Bakersfield, CA February 23, 24, 25.
